EXPERT CARE IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF FIBROMYALGIA

At Allina Health, our providers offer comprehensive, compassionate care to diagnose and treat fibromyalgia. Members of our fibromyalgia care team are committed to your well-being, helping you maintain function and wellness to live your best life.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is not associated with any other known diagnosis. Primary symptoms include fatigue and widespread muscle and joint pain. Common tender points include the neck, upper back, sternal area, elbows, buttocks, and sides of the hips and knees. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia may include:

  • numbness and tingling in extremities
  • poor sleep quality
  • headaches and facial pain
  • heightened sensitivity (e.g., bright lights, loud noises, certain smells, even light touch)
  • chest pain, usually from rib cage and muscles
  • irritable bladder and bowel
  • depression and anxiety
  • cognitive difficulties

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. Many factors may play a role, including genetics and external factors such as surgery, infection, poor sleep, rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue diseases and severe trauma or psychological stress. Physicians diagnose fibromyalgia through lab work and X‑rays, which rule out any other potential conditions.

If you are experiencing symptoms of fibromyalgia, contact your primary care provider.
