Levels of mental health care overview
Mental health care needs vary from person to person. We understand this and offer different levels of care to meet the broad range of needs - everything from crisis care and inpatient services to outpatient and specialty care. Learn more about the levels of mental health care offered at Allina Health:
Crisis mental health care
Crisis care services are provided by multidisciplinary mental health care teams located within Allina Health emergency rooms. These professionals can assess patients experiencing a mental health crisis and also initiate treatment and help determine next steps in care.
Inpatient mental health care
Inpatient care is hospitalized treatment for individuals in acute, safety-compromising circumstances due to a sudden mental health crisis. Our care team (including psychiatry, nursing, psychology and medicine) focuses on acute stabilization and coordination with outpatient teams to foster smooth transitions to outpatient services.
Intermediate mental health care
Intermediate, or outpatient mental health services, include a range of core and specialty programs that provide different levels of care to meet the diverse needs of our community. Services include partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care as well day treatment and specialty services.
Hospital-based specialty clinic care
Hospital-based specialty clinics (HBCs) provide outpatient mental health care to those living with complex health needs. Specialty tracks include neuromodulation, trauma, addiction, perinatal mental health, geriatric mental health, first episode psychosis and complex medication management.
In-clinic integrated mental health care
We work closely with primary care providers within our Allina Health network. We have a team of psychiatric and therapy providers located within select primary care clinics, offering support by e-consultation, virtual visits and in-clinic appointments.
