Inpatient mental health care for children and adolescents

Our inpatient care services treat children and adolescents experiencing acute, safety-compromising circumstances due to a sudden mental health crisis.

Inpatient care requires a referral (usually by ED crisis care) and includes hospitalization for assessment, evaluation and treatment by an expert team of specialists and clinicians. The focus of this care is stabilization and coordination with outpatient teams to a ensure a smooth, timely transition from inpatient to outpatient services.

Intermediate mental health care for adolescents

Intermediate outpatient services include a range of core and specialty programs, which provide different levels of care for adolescents ages 13-17. Most programs require a referral from a specialty provider. In some cases, self-referrals are accepted. All programs require an assessment to ensure placement into the appropriate program.

Partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adolescents

PHP is a three- to four-week, all-day (Monday – Friday) outpatient (day hospital) mental health treatment program directed by a psychiatrist in a group therapy setting. PHP can help prevent and reduce mental health hospitalization. Learn more about adolescent partial hospitalization services.

Intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adolescents

Our intensive outpatient program supports adolescents navigating complex mental health challenges who need expanded outpatient services but not partial hospitalization care. Programs meet several times a week for six to eight weeks. Learn more about intensive outpatient services.

Day treatment program for adolescents

Day treatment is a six- to eight-week program designed to manage mental health concerns and improve resilience both at home and school. Day treatment meets three times a week, three hours at a time and includes group and skills-based therapy. Learn more about adolescent day treatment.

Hospital-based specialty clinic care

Allina Health hospital-based specialty clinics (HBCs) provide outpatient mental health care to those living with complex health needs. These may be patients managing two or more distinct health conditions at the same time or those with severe or persistent mental health conditions.
