David Tverberg, MD
Chief of Staff
My specialties:
- Psychiatry
Professional interests:
- General Adult Psychiatry
- Treatment of inpatient psychiatric stabilization and medication management
Practice philosophy: I follow a medical model of diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses.
What are you passionate about and why? Accurate diagnosis and, when possible, communication with outpatient providers to ensure continuity of care.
If you weren't a health care provider, what would you be? I would work as a groundskeeper or janitor at my church.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? My father was a physician in rural WI. I saw how much he was able to help people in our community and wanted to do the same. I haven't been disappointed--it is a joy to come to work every day.
What is something you have learned from your patients?
1. Shut-up and listen; many people want to know that they have been heard.
2. Be humble when making diagnoses and offering treatment.
3. Don't take away hope.
What is one of the challenges of this career you enjoy? And why? I love trying to problem solve difficult social situations. Lack of insurance or support system. Unstable family dynamics. No two days are the same; I always try to learn something new every day.
What is your personal health goal? Continue to be able to run 30 miles per week when I am 70.
What is the best thing you've done for your health or the best health advice you've received? I ran cross country in college and continued to run marathons in medical school and residency. Working out on a regular basis is one of the best stress relievers available with few side effects.
What are you most proud of? Professionally: The team that works with me on the mental health unit. I would not hesitate for a second to have any of my family members come to my unit. Personally: With my wife we are proud of our children and their spouses.
What are a few of your personal achievements? 24 marathons including 4 times at the Boston Marathon (PR=2:35:37). Winner of People's Choice award for photography 2019 Steele Co. Fair (largest county fair in MN). Elder at Bethel Church.
