What is your practice philosophy? To provide whole person, comprehensive care to all patients I am privileged to care for by forming a close therapeutic relationship with a focus on listening, compassion and equity.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? I became a provider to apply my passion for biology and learning to help others. I knew I wanted to become a physician at the end of high school. I was initially fascinated by the minute details of how the human body works, but now have evolved to be most interested in how the whole human being exists in their home, community and work.
Something I have learned from my patients is: I have learned so much more from my patients than I have given. The most important lessons have been in patience and gratitude. I have seen so many of my patients suffer with chronic diseases with no cure but they have continued to be grateful for what they have and patience with our broken medical system that they must navigate to continue to live.
One of the challenges of this career that I enjoy is (and why): I enjoy the challenge and art of medicine involved in applying medical science and guidelines to an individual patient with unique needs and goals. Making medical plans patient centered is so key to having the best outcomes and health. I particularly enjoy the helping patients manage chronic diseases including mental health problems, addiction and chronic pain. There are not currently cures for these conditions, but I enjoy helping patients find ways to decrease their suffering and increase their function and ability to enjoy life.
My personal health goal is: Sustain a regular meditation and exercise practice.
What is the best thing you’ve done for your health or the best health advice you’ve received? Regularly practicing meditation and exercise has greatly improved my mood and decreased my stress. Self care by attending to my own physically and emotional health is key to my ability to help and care for patients.
