Jessica Greupner, MD, found her passion for medicine when she lived in East Africa for two semesters during her undergraduate years.

"I volunteered there in a clinic," she said. "I found that medicine was so tangible and made such a remarkable difference in people's lives."

Greupner is a Minneapolis native. She earned an undergraduate degree in environmental studies at Gustavus Adolphus College and her medical degree at the University of Colorado. She completed her residency in emergency medicine and a fellowship in ultrasound at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.

Greupner enjoys emergency medicine, she said, because of the way she is able to connect with her patients and their families.

"Certainly in emergency medicine, we hope to play a part in some of the big health events of people's lives, and to make a difference for them and their families," she said. "I also really believe that I am here to add whatever I can to help, whether it's additional workup, or simply different explanations or conversations. I feel extremely lucky to get to connect with people the way we do every day."

As for her additional training in ultrasound, Greupner said that the equipment has become a critical part of her practice.

"Ultrasound is used in many different ways in emergency medicine and has become so accessible at the bedside," she said. 

Outside the Emergency Department, Dr. Greupner stays busy with her family, including husband, Jay, daughter, Lu and son, Cash.

Jay has been a stay-at-home dad while Dr. Greupner has been in residency and fellowship. Before that, he was a fly-fishing guide in Colorado, where they lived at the time. "He is very excited to fish here in the surrounding areas of New Ulm," she said.
