I am passionate about: learning, laughing, reading, movies, sports, exercise, spending time with family, eating good food and meeting interesting people who tell good stories.
I became a pharmacist because: I like the scientific process of problem solving. I knew medicines could dramatically change peoples lives by relieving pain, improving diabetes or even curing a disease. Plus, I like asking questions. Now I get to have a job where I ask people questions all day!
If I wasn't a pharmacist, I would probably be a writer or a teacher. If you would have asked me when I was 10, I would have said center fielder for the Chicago Cubs! The things I enjoy the most are helping someone through the process of learning, improving a skill or working on some type of positive change.
One of the challenges of this career that I enjoy is: figuring out how medicine is going to fit in people's lives. This means improving medication use for the patients reasons, not necessarily mine. Caregivers have goals for managing diabetes, blood pressure, asthma and many other ailments. The challenge is to make these goals real and meaningful for the patient.
The best health advice I have received is: to look at the five people who you hang out with most (friends, family). Look at their health habits. If their habits are poor then it will be harder for you to achieve wellness. Good health is more than just you and your will power. Find people who are invested in your well being and spend time with them. It can make a huge difference!
