Something I have learned from my patient is: that listening intently, empathizing, and fostering a healing relationship is integral to alleviating my patient's suffering. Also, people have a tremendous capacity for open-heartedness and resilience.
I became an internal medicine physician because: I enjoy developing relationships with older adult patients over time. I find it very satisfying to have discussions regarding overall goals of care with my elderly patients, focusing on the quality of their lives and helping them have the most vibrant and best possible final years.
One of the challenges of this career that I enjoy is: the intellectual challenge of medicine, "figuring out the interesting case". I also love educating my patients and putting my pastoral skills to use.
