What is an arrhythmia?

An arrhythmia is an irregularity in the rate or rhythm of your heartbeat. These irregularities are the result of abnormal electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat too quickly, too slowly or irregularly. Common diagnoses managed by our team include:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib): this impacts more than 2.5 million people in the United States and can increase the risk for stroke
  • Supraventricular tachycardia
  • Premature ventricular contractions

Heart rhythm management at Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute

Our heart rhythm management team is committed to providing world-class care that supports your heart health and overall well-being. Our specialists are recognized globally for their demonstrated expertise, comprehensive treatment and excellent outcomes. You can rest assured, knowing you are surrounded by an entire team of experts who are collaborative, caring and seamlessly connected on all matters concerning your health care needs. Your care team may include:

  • cardiologists
  • heart rhythm specialists (cardiac electrophysiologists)
  • advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants)
  • device clinic nurses
  • experienced nurses
  • genetic counselors

Sometimes, your providers may partner with other specialists when conditions require additional care. For example, you may be connected with providers who specialize in subspecialties such as heart failure, valve or structural heart care or advanced cardiovascular imaging.

This connected approach to your care gives you peace of mind that you are truly part of one team. It’s a team that knows you, understands your medical needs and is there to address all your concerns as you receive the highest quality care.

What to expect

Testing is the first step in your specialized care. Testing helps your team understand your condition and identify the type of arrhythmia you may have. Tests may include:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG):  a test that studies the heart's electrical system
  • Holter (remote) monitoring: a device that is worn to record your heart activity during a period of days
  • Echocardiogram: an ultrasound test that produces detailed images of your heart
  • Cardiac event monitor (recorder): a small device that is worn for a longer period of time to record heartbeat irregularities
  • Implantable loop recorder: a small device implanted under the skin to monitor your heartbeat continuously for an extended period of time

Treatment

Based on test results, your care team will develop a treatment plan that best meets your needs. Treatment may include:

  • Cardioversion: Normal heart rhythm can sometimes be restored using a defibrillator (electric cardioversion) or medications (pharmacologic cardioversion).
  • Catheter ablation: A procedure that delivers energy to deactivate the heart tissue that is causing arrhythmia. (AHMHI offers individualized ablation plans using thermal and pulsed-field ablation technologies.)
  • Pacemaker or Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD): A permanent device that helps your heart maintain normal rhythm through electrical pulses. Patients who need a pacemaker or ICD enroll in a follow-up surveillance program.
HRM innovation
Leaders in innovation and research

AHMHI has a strong commitment to innovation and research. We also have strong partnerships with the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation and the Joseph F. Novogratz Family Heart Rhythm Center. Our experts are involved in both studies and clinical trials and also publish their research extensively, contributing to the discovery of new treatments and innovations.

How to connect

You will need a referral from your cardiologist or primary care provider (who will connect with cardiology) for heart rhythm management services.

Your cardiologist or primary care provider (working with cardiology) can determine whether specialized heart rhythm management care is your best next step. You can expect your provider to:

  • evaluate your symptoms and current condition
  • provide insight into the type of specialized care you may need for your condition
  • refer you for heart rhythm management/electrophysiology services, if needed
