What is your practice philosophy? I think each patient is unique and different and requires a carefully constructed, individualized plan. While some patients may want surgical treatment for their condition, others may prefer non-surgical or clinic-based treatment options. It is important to work collaboratively with each patient and their primary providers to figure out an appropriate plan that takes into consideration their overall health and their approach to medicine/surgery.
What are you passionate about? And why? I am passionate about health policy and developing quality, results-driven health systems. I think improving systems of care and our underlying health infrastructure has an incredible impact on patients.
If I wasn’t a provider, I would be a: Prior to going to medical school I was a lawyer. I enjoy law and policy and would be happy working to improve law and policy in our country. That being said, I also love the outdoors. I would thoroughly enjoy working in a mountain town in a guide/outfitter capacity.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? I find medicine/surgery to be extremely rewarding and an incredible privilege. Once I realized that I enjoy the doctor-patient relationship, the beauty and complexity of anatomy, and the science of medicine, I knew that medicine and specifically surgery was an excellent fit for me.
Something I have learned from my patients is: Every patient has a story and you can learn something new and interesting from each patient. My favorite restaurants were recommended by patients, I have learned about fascinating places all around the world from patients, and I find that I get an excellent pulse on society from talking with patients.
What is the best thing you’ve done for your health or the best health advice you’ve received? Everything is about balance.
What are you most proud of? I am incredibly lucky to have an amazing wife and I am extremely proud of my three children.
