Joseph Bellamy, MD

Allina Health is proud to be the Official Team Physicians of Minnesota United FC. Dr. Bellamy serves as one of the physicians for the professional soccer team, providing orthopedic and sports medicine care for the athletes.

Practice philosophy: As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the foot and ankle, I often encounter patients with difficult conditions that impact quality of life. Utilizing non-surgical and surgical methods, I partner with my patients to determine the best treatment plan for helping them improve their function.

What are you passionate about and why? I am passionate about my work as it provides the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life on a daily basis.

If you weren't a health care provider, what would you be? Airline Pilot... I love airplanes, airports and travel.

Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? Orthopedics requires teamwork and I enjoy partnering with patients to reach a goal. My first career was as an athletic trainer which ultimately peaked my interest in orthopedic surgery.

What is something you have learned from your patients? I've learned that you can't underestimate the power of listening. Not only do you get to know the person, but most of the time, they tell you everything you need to make a sound diagnosis.

What is one of the challenges of this career you enjoy? And why? The variability and diversity of conditions encountered in orthopaedic surgery can be challenging, but it also keeps the work day exciting and unpredictable.

What is your personal health goal? Stay active daily

What is the best thing you've done for your health or the best health advice you've received? The best advice I've been given, and what I often pass on to my patients, is keep moving. No matter what the injury is, find a way to stay active and keep your body moving.

What are you most proud of? Without a doubt I'm most proud of my time as an orthopaedic surgeon in the Navy. It provided me the opportunity to serve in Afghanistan providing trauma care to seriously injured service members. I also had the honor to serve as a team physician for the Navy SEAL teams and trainees.

What are a few of your personal achievements? Serving in the Navy, hiking in Patagonia, seeing the Northern Lights above the Arctic Circle in Finland, and working with a professional soccer club
