Personal interests: Singing in the East Central Minnesota Chorale. My favorite movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey and my favorite book is William Osler: A Life in Medicine by Michael Bliss. I've enjoyed traveling to Maui, Hawaii, and to Alaska for the Iditarod trail sled dog race.
Why I became a doctor: I derive great joy from helping others. Each patient is a complex and interesting story, like a novel progressing in real time.
If I wasn't a doctor, I would be: A science reporter. I worked in radio broadcasting for eight years starting at age 15.
My personal health goal: To increase exercise, lose weight and follow a Mediterranean diet.
Things I'm most proud of: Our children, grandchildren, singing, and working on the MKSAP audio companion (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program of the American College of Physicians).
