Practice philosophy: I think my role as an oncologist is to be a trusted advisor and teacher. I try to arm my patients with as much information as they want in a way that is understandable. But they are ultimately in charge of deciding how they want to be treated. I also value getting to know my patients on a personal level. I think it helps me meet them where they are and is one of the things I most enjoy about this job.
What are you passionate about and why? Being a good father and husband (I hope!) are my greatest accomplishments and spending time with my family is a high priority. I am a rabid fan of the Green Bay Packers (sorry Viking fans!). I love technology although I still sometimes need help from my daughter with my phone.
If you weren't a health care provider, what would you be? Probably a high school biology teacher.
What is something you have learned from your patients? I have learned to never take for granted the simple pleasure of eating a hamburger. I've learned to not complain about the aches and pains of getting older. Not everyone gets that privilege.
What is one of the challenges of this career you enjoy? And why? Explaining complex medical issues in ways that non-medical people can understand. As oncology becomes increasingly complex, I think this skill has become more important.
What is your personal health goal? To be able to keep moving! And maybe finally run a sub-2-hour half marathon.
What is the best thing you've done for your health or the best health advice you've received? I'm pretty serious about getting regular exercise, it's good for my body and my brain. Eating real food as much as possible is good advice that I share with my patients. But the struggle is real!
What are you most proud of? I'm proud of raising 2 kind, thoughtful young people. I'm proud of my career - growing up, becoming a doctor seemed impossible. The people I've been able to help, the relationships I've been able to build - it has been an incredible honor.
