Laura McCarthy, MD, MPH

Practice philosophy: I am an empathetic provider, who feels privileged to care for patients, and believes that it is important to consider the many social, emotional, and physical factors that influence a person's health and wellbeing.

What are you passionate about and why? I care deeply that patients understand their condition and care plan. I enjoy helping patients, especially those who may not have previously accessed healthcare before, to feel comfortable in the hospital and find appropriate primary care follow-up to ensure continuity of care.

If you weren't a health care provider, what would you be? If I was not a health provider, I would be an elementary teacher or a professor of public health.

Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you?  I love caring for adults and children and hearing their stories. I enjoy working together with patients to restore their health so that they can return to doing the activities they love.

What is something you have learned from your patients? It is incredibly important to listen and be present in the moment with your patients.

What is one of the challenges of this career you enjoy? And why? I enjoy working together with patients to make complex medical decisions so that patients are invested in their care plan.

What is your personal health goal?I want to remain strong and limber so that I can play with my children, ski, and continue to travel.

What is the best thing you've done for your health or the best health advice you've received? Take time to exercise as it is an investment in yourself. It is ideal to set aside specific time and be consistent.

What are you most proud of? I am most proud of my children, and they people they are growing up to be.

What are a few of your personal achievements? I have a Masters in Public Health. I have started learning several languages (Spanish, French, Chinese).
