Practice philosophy: To listen. My grandfather was a hard-working OBGyn in our small rural northern MN town and told me when I was applying to PA school that 90% of medicine involves listening. I listen to my patients’ needs and work with them individually to provide the best possible outcomes and care.
What are you passionate about and why? I am passionate about skin cancer prevention. I continually educate my patients, students, family and friends about the warning signs of skin cancer and the importance of practicing good and consistent sun protective measures to decrease their risks going forward.
If you weren't a health care provider, what would you be? A Veterinarian. I would love to take care of animals if I wasn’t taking care of people.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? I desired a career in which I could use medical knowlege to help guide and care for patients of all ages. I shadowed several health care professions and found the PA role aligned well with my goals.
What is something you have learned from your patients? I have learned that educating patients is the key to understanding. We need to know the risks and justifications in order to try and make positive changes in ourselves.
What is one of the challenges of this career you enjoy? And why? I enjoy the fact that medicine is continually changing and advancing. It is important to commit to being a life-long learner in order to provide new or alternative options and the best care possible.
What is your personal health goal? To practice what I preach. If I recommend something I should be putting my own words into action.
What is the best thing you've done for your health or the best health advice you've received? To start small and simple. It is easy to get off track with diet or an exercise routine when life gets busy or stressful. Setting small goals and building upon those allow successes along the way.
What are you most proud of? My family. My husband and 3 children are my biggest accomplishments in life. They keep me laughing every day. They allow me to maintain a good perspective on life during difficult times. They teach me to not overlook the little moments.
What are a few of your personal achievements? Completing a rigorous, year long fellowship in Dermatology.
Being named a captain of my collegiate tennis team at Gustavus.
Training for and completing Grandma’s 1/2 marathon.
