Practice philosophy: I believe good medicine includes hearing patients’ stories, empowering them to make informed choices, and assisting them to accomplish their health goals.
What are you passionate about and why? I'm passionate about building lifelong healing relationships, and I enjoy the time it takes to get to know my patients. Through hearing their stories and demonstrating my curiosity, we can improve chronic health through a personalized approach.
If you weren't a health care provider, what would you be? I would definitely be a baker, waking up early to bring delicious treats to life.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? I became a physician to address the health needs of patients and their communities. When I learned it required engaging my patients’ unique perspectives and strengths, I knew it was the perfect fit.
What is something you have learned from your patients? Each patient is unique, and it takes time and attention to get to know their individual challenges and strengths. Only through listening and taking time can you start to offer treatment plans.
What is one of the challenges of this career you enjoy? And why? I enjoy working with patients who have complex health needs because it creates the opportunity to work together and think creatively to find solutions.
What is your personal health goal? I want to master recipes with local vegetables and savor each season.
What is the best thing you've done for your health or the best health advice you've received? “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” by Michael Pollen
What are you most proud of? My wife and I have spent many hours training our Havanese dog, Truffle, to perform different tricks and agility feats. Learning to speak “dog” and teaching him some human words has been both a challenge and an endless joy.
What are a few of your personal achievements? I lived in the Dominican Republic and in Oaxaca, Mexico, practicing community and medical Spanish. Completing the University of Minnesota’s Resident Leadership Academy is another personal achievement.
