Yader Sandoval, MD, FACC, FSCAI is an Interventional Cardiologist with the Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. He specializes in the management of patients with coronary artery disease and complex coronary interventions. Dr. Sandoval is the author of over 120 peer-reviewed published manuscripts. Prior to joining the Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute, Dr. Sandoval was a Consultant and Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Sandoval completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) (2010-2013) in Minneapolis, MN, where he was recognized with the 2013 Morris Davidman Resident Teaching Award. He subsequently completed both his Cardiovascular Disease (2013-2016) and Interventional Cardiology (2016-2017) fellowships at the HCMC-Abbott Northwestern Hospital program. During this time he served as Chief Fellow (2015-2016) and was one of the 2016 American College of Cardiology (ACC) Young Investigator Award finalists. In 2017 he joined the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic, where from June 2017 until 2020 his primary practice was based at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he served as Medical Director of the Southwest Wisconsin Mayo Clinic Health System Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory from 2018 until 2020. He was subsequently recruited to join the Division of Interventional Cardiology at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN where he practiced as a Consultant and served as the Medical Director of the Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) Clinic until June 2022. In 2021, he was recognized with the Mayo Clinic Interventional Cardiology Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Sandoval joined the Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute in June 2022.
Dr. Sandoval is a physician-investigator with clinical and research interests related to patients affected by acute and chronic ischemic heart disease. His aim is to improve the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of patients that present with acute coronary syndrome or are burdened with coronary artery disease. He has published extensively in the field of acute myocardial infarction and myocardial injury and the clinical use of cardiac troponin assays for diagnosis and risk-stratification. He is particularly interested in improving the understanding of acute myocardial infarction occurring in the absence of atherothrombosis, a condition called type 2 myocardial infarction. He has worked in the development and validation of distinct novel risk-stratification strategies using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays to improve the rapid rule-in and rule-out of acute myocardial infarction. His research has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at both national and international scientific meetings, as well as book chapters, and abstracts.
Dr. Sandoval is board certified in Interventional Cardiology and Cardiovascular Disease. As part of the Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute, he offers both non-invasive and invasive cardiovascular services, including coronary artery disease (CAD) consultations, as well as procedures such as cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, radial access, percutaneous coronary intervention, complex coronary interventions, atherectomy, brachytherapy, percutaneous mechanical circulatory support, invasive coronary physiology (including microvascular disease) assessments, and intracoronary imaging using intravascular ultrasound or optical coherence tomography, among others.
