What is your practice philosophy? I feel it is important to develop a relationship with every patient so that we can collaborate on the best eye care outcome. First I need to listen, then we work together to achieve our goals.
What are you passionate about? And why? I am most passionate about being a father and husband because family comes first and nothing is as rewarding as spending time with my children watching them grow up. I also love spending time in nature because it gives me a sense of peace and contentment.
If I wasn’t a provider, I would be a: Meteorologist or maybe a chef because I am fascinated by weather and also love to cook.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? I’ve always been interested in becoming an eye doctor ever since my first visit to get my eyes checked in fifth grade. I thought the equipment was interesting and was astounded when I walked out with clear vision in my first pair of glasses.
Something I have learned from my patients is: Every patient has a story to tell and it’s important to take the time to listen because that is the first step in building a relationship. I have also learned that some patients get very apprehensive about visiting the eye doctor and it is our role to put them at ease through listening and positivity.
One of the challenges of this career that I enjoy is (and why): The challenge I enjoy the most in optometry is working with patients that have unique refractive problems (high astigmatism, anisometropia, needing prism) and finding a workable solution.
My personal health goal is: Healthy eating and daily exercise including walks or hikes, running, and strength training.
What is the best thing you’ve done for your health or the best health advice you’ve received? Learn about caloric density (some foods have a lot of calories), and make choices based on that. It may be partially about eating less, but it’s more about the choices you make.
What are you most proud of? The birth of my children and helping them grow up.
What are a few of your personal achievements? I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2005. Construction projects including building a shed and deck, building a rainwater system for an off grid cabin. I played trombone in a Twin Cities based musical ensemble.
