Learn to swim classes are for children ages 6 months to 16 years old. These community classes focus on water adjustment, safety skills and swim strokes while having fun in a warm water pool.
What it is
Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute offers learn to swim lessons for children with or without a disability, ages 6 months to 16 years old. These are open to the community
Good to know
Classes are available at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute locations in Golden Valley Minneapolis (Wasie Therapeutic Pool) and Stillwater. Not all classes are available at all locations. Classes include:
Waterbabies. For infants ages 6-36 months and their parents. For infants and parents, regardless of ability. Parents get in the water and work with their children on safety, water adjustment and swimming skills such as kicking, blowing bubbles, reaching and muscle control.
Water Tots 2. For children ages 3-4 years who have completed Waterbabies, but are not quite ready for Water Exploration. Children will increase their comfort in the water as they play and learn beginning swim skills, floating, splashing.
Water Exploration. For children ages 3 years and older, this class focuses on exploration and beginning water skills like floating, kicking, submerging and breath control.
Fundamental aquatic skills. For children ages 3 years and older, this class focuses on improving independent swimming and teaches front crawl breathing. Your child must pass our Water Exploration class or be able to float independently on his or her front and back.
Stroke development. This class focuses on front and back crawl, elementary back stroke with whip kick.
Stroke improvement. This class focuses on endurance and learning strokes like the front crawl with rhythmic breathing, back crawl, elementary back stroke with whip kick, and breast stroke.

What to expect
Our pools’ water temperature is a comfortable 92 degrees. Staircases, handrails, ramps and special pool wheelchairs provide easy access. A certified lifeguard or instructor is on duty. Locker rooms are available for you to shower and change clothes. You must provide Your own padlock, swimsuit and towel.
