What is your practice philosophy? I thoroughly enjoy being a family medicine physician, because it has given me the opportunity to focus on a wide variety of health issues to help patients. I strive to inform, teach, and empower patients to stay healthy. Preventive medicine is a top priority.
What are you passionate about? And why? I am passionate about family. I chose to specialize in family medicine because I am a ‘people person’ who values the importance of family, which shapes who we become and impacts our health. I appreciate relationships with patients and their communities. One of my favorite memories is taking care of four generations…and their neighbor…in a week. This event was a special experience!
If I wasn’t a provider, I would be a: Lawyer or C.P.A. Growing up, I always said I was going to become “a doctor, lawyer, or C.P.A.” I remember in elementary school when my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I answered “a doctor, lawyer, or C.P.A.” The instructor was quite intrigued and asked me what a C.P.A. was…and much to her surprise, I said a “certified public accountant.” Shortly thereafter, when my parents went to school conferences, my teacher shared this story and stated that no one had ever mentioned wanting to be a C.P.A. She was even more impressed I knew what C.P.A. stood for and could describe what the occupation did for a living.
Why did you become a provider? When did you know this was the career for you? I have always wanted to be able to help people and make them feel better. I remember when I was 3 years old, and I took pride in my Fisher-Price medical doctor kit. I would use the toy equipment, including the stethoscope, and try to make everyone better. Growing up, everyone knew that “Natalie would become a doctor someday.” I am blessed that when I graduated from medical school, I made my childhood dream a reality!
Something I have learned from my patients is: We all learn together as team. As much as I am honored to share recommendations on how to make someone feel better and provide resources to help patients make their decisions, I enjoy patients sharing their experiences and tips of advice on life.
One of the challenges of this career that I enjoy is (and why): Expect the unexpected. Medicine is an evolving field which keeps changing over time. I strive to keep up to date by collaborating with my colleagues, attending continuing medical education courses, and utilizing evidence based medicine resources.
What is the best thing you’ve done for your health or the best health advice you’ve received? Find joy and gratitude in life each day, no matter how big or how small.
What are you most proud of? I am proud of my family. My husband and I make time to relax and enjoy the simple things in life together. Our favorite pastimes include cooking, traveling, photography, bicycle rides, walking through the parks, attending church, cheering for our football teams, and spending time with extended family and friends.
