Foster Rood Renwick, DO, is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in general psychiatry and addiction medicine.
Hometown: Minneapolis, MN
What is your practice philosophy? As an addiction psychiatrist, I treat the whole person. I believe that we learn to become who we are and that we make changes as we adapt. We all start someplace, and we can't know what we've never experienced. We all need to do our own work, but I'm totally happy to be your guide as you get going, and show you how to be more happy, healthy, and successful!
What are you passionate about? I am passionate about the connection of physical and mental health. When we work on these two together, people find joy and fulfillment in life. Seeing joy in my patients makes me super happy! How could it not?
If I wasn't a provider, I would be a: An organic, small scale farmer.
Why did you become a provider? I always wanted to be a doctor, but never completed college. I was training for bicycle racing which is all about physiology. That got me more and more fascinated with how the body and mind work. I was off to the races, so to speak, and went from a small business owner to a pre-med student at 43. The rest has been a blur of wonderful challenges and opportunities.
Something that I have learned from my patients is: Be kind to others and myself.
One of the challenges of this career that I enjoy is: People are habit-based creatures. This can be good or bad. I enjoy helping people learn more about themselves, what and where they've learned to be who they are. Then looking for what's working and what's not, and helping people get closer to be the person they really hope to be. Another way to say this is to help folks have as little pain and as much function and joy in life!
My personal health goal is: In the United States, the life expectancy is about 78, but many people spend the last 10 years of their life with a debilitating illness. I want to close the gap and have as many healthy years both mentally and physically possible. My goal is to stay active physically, mentally, and spiritually so I can get the best use of my entire life.
What's the best thing you've done for your health? I exercise outdoors for an hour or more every day of the year. It keeps me physically healthy; but the real bonus is what it does for my mental health.
What are you most proud of? Finishing medical residency at age 55.
What are a few of you personal achievements? Training for and competing in Paris-Breast-Paris, a 1200Km Bicycle Ultra-Marathon in France. I’ve done similar events in the Canadian Rockies and Boston- Montreal-Boston.
